Several times I’ve heard folks say, “Wow, y’all sing a lot in your service!” We usually sing 11 or 12 pieces of music, not all of them immediately recognizable or easy, and often we throw our energies into learning something new. For the next few weeks we are learning Rise Up, O Lord (a version of Psalm 10), and while the melody is quite simple, singing the lyrics can be challenging. This approach has a great pedagogical value because it faithfully represents the Psalm. It forces us to grapple with difficult phrasing, thereby effectively highlighting clear statements about our Lord. The piece is doing its job if you respond with “Wait, what did I just sing?” After three weeks, see if some of
these unusual phrases don’t pop into your head and begin to shape your understanding of God.
