The two Scripture readings this morning (from Daniel 7 and Revelation 1) emphasize God’s eternity as the “Ancient of Days” and the “first and the last.” This great comfort – that our God sits on the throne, and will be there for all eternity – informs many of the hymns chosen for this morning. We fall down before Him “who wert, and art, and ever more shall be” (Holy, Holy, Holy) and give Him “glory, while eternal ages run” (Glory Be To God The Father). He shall “reign forevermore in might” (It Is Good To Sing Your Praises—Psalm 92), and His love is an “immortal flame” (To Our Redeemer’s Glorious Name). The service closes with O God, Our Help In Ages Past, a prayer that our timeless God, to whom a thousand ages are like a single evening, would be our hope for years to come.
