The final portion of Hebrews 1 concludes a long discussion of the supremacy of God’s Son, which we’ve been walking
through the past three weeks. The elements of this morning’s service were chosen to reflect this theme. The Scripture
readings call Jesus the “head of the body, the church” (Colossians 1:18) and the “blessed and only sovereign” (1
Timothy 6:15). The hymns declare that He is the “King of Kings” (We Will Glorify), who rules wherever the sun
shines (Jesus Shall Reign) and whose kingdom cannot fail (Rejoice, The Lord Is King). Psalm 110, which we sing and
hear quoted in the sermon text, speaks of Jesus making His enemies a footstool (The Lord Has Spoken To My Lord—
Psalm 110). Psalm 76 (In Judah The Almighty’s Known—Psalm 76) describes the proudest rulers of the earth “fear[ing]
the Lord upon His day.” Yet this same Christ gently gathers us at His feet like a shepherd gathering the sheep (There’s
A Wideness In God’s Mercy). The Son who is worshipped by angels was also mocked, scorned, and lifted up on the cross
to die for our sins. —Henry C. Haffner
