Last week reminded us that the great city of peace was destroyed and had become the city of desolation. This week we are reminded that Jesus Christ will build His shining city, His temple, and His kingdom. Many of the hymns we will sing this morning capture the nature of this kingdom beautifully: Holy Zion’s help forever is Christ (Christ Is Made The Sure Foundation); the Lord’s salvation comes from Zion’s hill (Lord, Protect Your People—Psalm 14); Zion confesses the graciousness of God (O Sing Ye Hallelujah—Psalm 147); perfect beauty shines forth from Zion (The Mighty God, The Lord—Psalm 50); from the security of Zion we smile at our foes (Glorious Things Of Thee Are Spoken). Zion is the picture of a city, a temple, and a kingdom without end and without flaws. It is the Lord’s people, washed by the blood of the lamb. This is not only a glorious vision, but a glorious truth of which we sing today.

Recall to me the delights of piety; and, both in the conception of every good purpose and in the successful execution of it, may I give Thy Spirit all the praise and all the glory."
