“For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.” (5:6)
Outline:
● Justification by faith leads to peace with God. We are saved by God from God. (1)
● Rejoice in hope of the glory of God (2)
● Rejoice in sufferings? The golden chain of hope (3-5)
● Christ died for the ungodly! (6-9)
● Salvation is from the death, resurrection, and continued mediation of Christ.(10-11)
● Covenant theology: The two heads of the two humanities: Adam and Christ (12-21)
Adam and Christ Compared and Contrasted :
● Both born sinless (Ecc 7:22, 1 John 3:5)
● Both public persons / federal head of man (vs 12, 18)
● Both born under the law “that promised life” (Gen 2: 17, Gal 4:4, Rom 7:10)

 

ADAM JESUS
The first man Adam (1 Cor 15:45) The second or last Adam (1 Cor 15:45)
Head of the Old Creation (vs. 12) Head of the New Creation (2 Cor.5:17;

Adams’s one sin leads to death for all.
In Adam’s fall, sinned we all. (vs. 18)
Christ’s obedience unto death leads to life
for the many. (vs. 19)
Consequences of Adam’s act:
● Death ( vs. 12,14,15)
● Judgement (vs. 16,18)
● Condemnation (vs. 16,18)
Consequences of Christ’s act:
● Life as a free gift (vs. 17,18,21)
● Grace (vs. 15,17,20,21)
● Justification (vs. 16,18,19)
● Righteousness (vs. 17,19,21)
● Reigning (vs. 17, 21)
