One of St Augustine’s best-known lines from his Confessions is, “You have made us for Yourself, and our hearts are
restless till they find rest in You.” Here, Augustine hits on the heart of today’s passage. The author of Hebrews has
been reminding his readers of the surety of Christ’s finished work. The believer’s identity is now Christ. Jesus is the
Shepherd of His people. In His bosom we are safely lodged and rest free from danger. Because our identity is secure in
Him, we no longer need to seek the approval of man to find rest. Our rest lies in the vast ocean of the deep, deep love of
Jesus. We were made for God to glorify God, and it is in that glory where we find our true rest and joy. As we glorify
our Creator, we will reap the blessing of a peace that surpasses our understanding. We will see His kingdom prosper
and not only us, but our children and our children’s children, will lift their voices to glorify Jesus Christ the Lord, the
only place of rest for the restless heart. —Emma Marsh
