Christmas is here! Today, we will greet our Lord who is “born this happy morning.” We’ll confess that “the Lord is come,” and we implore the earth to “receive her King.” We’ll declare, “To us, a child of hope is born.” We’ll sing alleluias to the “lovely child, holy child,” and we’ll hail this baby as the “Word made flesh.” Given all this celebration, the sermon text may seem a bit unexpected—the song of the suffering, despised, “man of sorrows” from Isaiah 53, the exact same sermon text we had on Good Friday earlier this year. But I think we all need this reminder: Jesus became man to be pierced by nails for our transgressions. The baby was born to bear the cross “for me, for you.” —Henry C. Haffner
