Week 4: Galatians: Justification Through Faith Alone In Christ Alone

Galatians 3:15-29 Matt Morrison Elder

Full Handout Galatians 3:15-29

Recap (Chapter 3:1-14) Salvation is by faith, not works of the law

Paul berated the Galatians for their utter foolishness to turn from Christ back to the law
Reminds us by the example of Abraham that the only path to salvation has always been faith in Christ
The law demands exact obedience, thus only puts fallen men under a curse
Christ became the curse for sinners, thus opening the blessing of Abraham to any who by the Spirit
come to faith in Christ

Overview (Chapter 3:15-29) Salvation is by promise, not the law
Mosaic economy, rightly understood, is not contrary to the promise, but only subservient
God didn’t deal with the Israelites on a different economy. ”The church is plan A, and there is no plan B.”
Mosaic law served as schoolmaster for the Israelites until Christ
But now, those by faith in Christ all are heirs according to the promise

3:15-18 The Promised Seed
15 To give a human example, brothers: even with a man-made covenant, no one annuls it or adds to it once it has been ratified.
God made an inviolable, unchanging covenantal promise to Abraham (Gen 15:1-5)
