2/3/19 Mark 11:12-33

In the second half of Mark 11, we see two incredible displays of Jesus’ divine authority: when He curses the fig tree and when He cleanses the temple, along with an attempted challenge of His authority by the Pharisees. This morning, we will declare this authority in word and song, beginning with the words of Jesus Himself in today’s Gospel Invitation: “All authority in Heaven and on Earth has been given unto Me.” We will describe Him as the “Almighty King” (Come Thou Almighty King), whose domain is infinite and whose reign is everlasting (Holy God, We Praise Your Name). All lands shall fear Him (All Father Litany) and even angels bow down before Him (All Hail The Power Of Jesus’ Name). As He displays in the episode with the fig tree, whatever His will ordains is done (All Glory Be To God On High). Because of this, we are able to respond, “well for us Thou rulest,” because only He has the authority to wash away our sin (Nothing But The Blood), to be our “Savior sure” (Sing Praise To God—Psalm 68). In light of this, we are charged to continually proclaim His sovereign power (God, My King, Thy Might Confessing), confessing Him to one another and to the watching world. —Henry C. Haffner
