The Only True God

The scriptures we read and the hymns we sing in this morning’s service all focus on God’s majesty, power, and sovereignty. After we are called to worship by Psalm 105, which reminds us that the Lord is our God and to glory in His name, we sing that He is “God indeed,” that “without our aid He did us make,” and that His truth “shall from age to age endure” (All People That On Earth Do Dwell—Psalm 100). We’ll call Him “the Almighty” and declare that all earthly rulers will bring Him gifts and pay Him reverence (In Judah The Almighty’s Known—Psalm 76). We’ll prepare for the sermon with the knowledge that “in God alone our hope securely stands” (Let Children Hear The Mighty Deeds—Psalm 78). We come to the table acknowledging that “there’s nothing like my God” (My God, My Portion, And My Love), bowing with humble adoration before His greatness (How Great Thou Art). The service closes with the proclamation that only our God is holy and that there is none beside Him (Holy, Holy, Holy). As we dive into our study of God’s law with a look at the first commandment, let these hymns and readings remind us of the awesome majesty of the God who demands our exclusive worship. —Henry C.
